Welcome to the Post-WIMP Era

As far as I know

It is hard to say exactly when the WIMP paradigm came into being. The mouse and pointer (or ‘bug’ as it was originally called) came out of the work of Douglas Engelbart and his research staff at the Stanford Research Institute during the mid to late 1960s (his Mother of all Demonstrations is still amazing to watch). It was later, with Xerox Parc’s Alto and Xerox Star, and with the Apple Lisa, that the WIMP approach solidified. Which device got there first is somewhat irrelevant; between them, these early devices established the central features of what we now know as desktop environments.

The ‘WIMP’ paradigm is made up of four key components: windows, icons, menus and a pointer. The approach was highly file-centric when it was conceived, and mimicked the physical world of the office. There were files and file systems, and a desktop containing a variety of objects, such…

Hover zoom a chrome extension which will make it easy to view photos.

Hover zoom is a chrome extension which will make it easy to view photos at many sites . What it does is that instead of clicking a photo to view , it make it to zooms on just a mouse hover . I have been using a similar kind of extension for Facebook called fbzoom . But this extension works on many sites including Facebook , amazon , reedit , flicker , tumblr etc . The extension at chrome store says following
“Browse images galleries with ease: move the mouse cursor over thumbnails to view images in their full size without loading a new page. Pictures are automatically resized if they don’t fit the window.”

Here is the screen shot of how it looks .

hoverzoom

After installing this extension you have to just hover an image to see its full version . Some time on sites we see thumbnail of a screenshot and we have click the image to see what it is , but this extension saves time you have to just hover the mouse it to see it . as in my post the above screenshot is also a thumbnail , you have to just hover it to see the full size .
After installing this extension you will see an icon in the url bar if the extension is active on that site .This extension has good options to configure . You can set delay and animation duration  , you can also disable it for some specific site . In the option setting you can also set key shortcut to enable or disable this extension. following are the list of options

• Disable zooming for specific sites

• Enable zooming only for specific sites (white list mode)

• Adjustable delay and fading effect

• Zoom images only when a specific key is held down

• Semi-transparent zoomed images

Conclusion is that this extension is real-time saver . Do you like this extension tell or you have something better tell me in comments .

Redshift not working in fedora15 ,16 !!! here is solution to protect your eyes .

Redshift is a small software for Gnu-Linux which help you to protect your eyes , it will change the color and temperature of your screen according to your day night setting . it will change change the color of the screen as the day  is progressed . At night ,color of your temperature  will be very dull to protect your eyes . Now you will be thinking that how this software does it automatically it is simply by knowing your latitude and longitude .  Here is the command by which you can download and install in fedora

yum install redshift
yum install gtk-redshift

Until fedora 14 there was no problem because it was configured automatically with gnome clock which had a location option. But now in fedora 16 there is no location in the clock so you can  not start redshift automatically . So you have to configure it manually and here the option how to do it

gtk-redshift -l   LAT:LONG

LAT=latitude
LOG=longitude

Type you cities longitude and latitude , use this command and you will be having a running redshift  in fedora 16
